Week 11 College Football Playoff Rankings: Boise State Ranked #22, San Diego State Unranked

The Broncos are in the thick of the CFP’s first top 25 of 2019. The Aztecs still have some work to do.

Still plenty of football left.

The first College Football Playoff rankings are out and, as expected, the Boise State Broncos begin in the top 25 at #22 while the San Diego State Aztecs will need to rack up some more wins.

It appeared that the highest-rated Mountain West team would be behind a pair of AAC teams and, no surprise, Cincinnati and Memphis begin out in front. The real surprise is that, at least in the eyes of the committee, the top three G5 teams are essentially neck and neck as the Bearcats and Tigers are #20 and #21, respectively.

There also isn’t much breathing room behind the Broncos, either, as the American Athletic Conference landed two other teams in the top 25: #24 Navy and #25 SMU.

The race to the Group of Five’s likely bid in the Cotton Bowl, however, will rest on whether Boise State can make up ground on the AAC teams ahead of them and, thankfully, the short answer is yes. Later in the week, we will have the more detailed pecking order of G5 teams so, for now, this explanation will be short.

The Broncos are favored to win out and finish 11-1, per ESPN’s Football Power Index at 38.1 percent which is the highest percentage. Cincinnati is at 20.4, SMU, 14.8, and Memphis is at 9.5 percent. These are all regular-season numbers.

Those numbers are what the Broncos have in their favor but, of course, all they can really control is winning out while hoping to receive help elsewhere.

As for San Diego State, the Aztecs are only given a 2.5% chance to win out and are currently forecast to be slight underdogs, per FPI, in games at Hawaii and at home against BYU in the regular season finale.
