Nevada’s Seniors go out with a bang
Both the Nevada Wolfpack and the Colorado State Rams ran 73 offensive plays on Saturday. That would turn out to be the only thing the Rams would match the Wolf Pack in.
The Wolf Pack’s Seniors played their final home game for the silver and blue at Mackey Stadium and things really couldn’t have gone much better as they steamrolled Colorado State 49-10 to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2015. Colorado State was held scoreless until the 8:32 mark of the fourth quarter.
Nevada’s Senior quarterback, Ty Gangi, left the Mackey Stadium’s field for the final time early in the fourth quarter after having an absolutely sensational career performance. Gangi torched the Rams and finished the night with 404 yards passing after completing 28-of-35 attempts, four touchdowns (ties career high) to three different receivers, and no interceptions. Gangi’s final career touchdown pass at Mackey came late in the third quarter to wide receiver Kaleb Fossum, a much deserved first touchdown reception on his 59th catch of the season.
Kaleb Fossum wasn’t the only receiver to catch his first touchdown on Saturday. Freshman wide receiver, Romeo Doubs, had a career day catching his first two touchdowns of the season and finished with 120 yards on eight receptions, including a 36 yard long which resulted in a TD.
Nevada’s defense has continued to look impressive as they haven’t allowed more than 25 points in five of their last six games. They hadn’t allowed a score in four straight quarters until Colorado State scored a touchdown with 8:32 remaining in the game. At that point, Nevada was leading 49-7 and the game was all but over. The defense finished with five sacks, 2.5 of them from Seniors Malik Reed and Lucas Weber.
Nevada had 636 total yards and seven touchdowns to Colorado State’s 260 and one. The Wolf Pack’s offense was firing on all cylinders the entire game, and for good reason, ESPN had Nevada’s “win probability” at 99.9% from the start of the third quarter on. Nevada’s rushing attack was led by Freshman Toa Taua who had 83 yards on 12 carries, including a “must see”48-yard run. Freshman Devonte Lee contributed a couple one yard rushing touchdowns as well.
Colorado State’s Sophomore quarterback, Collin Hill, finished with 186 yards on 23-of-40 attempts, one touchdown, and one interception. The Ram’s lone touchdown came on an eight-yard pass from Hill to Junior wide receiver Preston Williams. Williams also led Colorado State’s receiving core with 69 yards on seven receptions.
Both teams will be back in action next Saturday as Nevada travels to San Jose State and Colorado State heads home to play No.14 Utah State.
