#22 Boise State vs. Troy: Broncos Destroy Trojans, 56-20

Boise State begins 2018 with a beat down of last year’s Sun Belt co-champs.

The #22 Boise State Broncos traveled to Alabama to take on the Troy Trojans.  Troy, who received votes in both the coaches and AP poll, put up a fight but it was not enough as a dominant performance by the Broncos on both sides of the ball gave the victory to Boise State.

Boise State’s offense and defense were both in sync and imposed their will on both sides of the field.  The Broncos, playing against a good group of 5 school, showed why they are the favorite to represent the mid majors in the New Year’s Six. Team Captain Brett Rypien, Jabril Frazier, and Tyler Horton led the way in the Broncos victory.

Game Flow

First Quarter

Troy received the ball first and promptly went 3 and out which led to a punt and a nice 7 yard return by Avery Williams. Quarterback Brett Rypien was sacked on Boise State’s first offense possession of the 2018 season but Rypien and company would quickly regroup. 4 completions and a 8 yard Alexander Mattison run was capped with a touchdown courtesy of a 20 yard strike from Rypien to Sean Modster. The Boise State defense forced another 3 and out but a muffed punt gave the ball back to Troy. Led by the heroics of running back Jabir Daughtry-Frye, the Trojans would take advantage of the special teams miscue and tie the score up at 7. Boise State had a three and out which was followed by turnover on downs by Troy near midfield.  Rypien took advantage of the great field position and hit CT Thomas for a long 53 yard touchdown. Troy would limp to the end of the first quarter with an interception by the Idaho Vandal transfer, Tony Lashley.

Second Quarter

Broncos wasted no time picking up where they left off.  Rypien moved the Broncos down the field after the Boise State interception with both his arm and legs before Mattison punched it in for his first touchdown. Troy responded with a 3 and out and Rypien went back to work.  Robert Mahone and Mattison picked up yardage on the ground before Rypien found Akilian Butler for another aerial touchdown. The Boise State defense, not to be shown up by the offense, once again forced a punt, this time after 4 plays.  Rypien and Mattison continued to lead an efficient and effective offense, this time the Broncos scored with a monster 54 yard pass from Rypien to Modster. Troy did muster a drive that picked up some yardage near the end of the half but missed a field goal as time expired.
