San Diego, CA –  The #22 SDSU Aztecs (7-2, 0-0 MW) face off against the St. Mary’s Gaels (7-3, 0-0 WCC) on a neutral court during the Jerry Colangelo Classic at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday afternoon, December 10th.

The Aztecs will be once again decked out in their turquoise Nike N7 uniforms for the game to honor Native Americans and Aboriginal youth. The Aztecs are undefeated (9-0) in games featuring N7 gear, and they will be wearing these uniforms away from Viejas Arena for the first time ever.

The Gaels fully expect to take down the Aztecs… Let’s take a closer look.

Why the Gaels Will Win

Saint Mary’s won its first six games to start the season but then dropped three in a row. The Gaels snapped the three-game losing streak with a decisive 66-46 victory over visiting Missouri State on Wednesday night.

After scoring only 26 points in the first half the Gaels got hot shooting 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half to separate from Missouri State.

“That’s kind of been our Achilles heel, is the first half we score so low we can’t separate,” Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett said.  Bennet is in his 22nd season in Moraga, California.

The Gaels lost in overtime to Washington in the championship game of the Wooden Legacy on Nov. 24, and then lost another close game to New Mexico on Nov. 30.

Saint Mary’s next took on No. 1 ranked Houston on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas, and trailed by just six points with nine minutes left before eventually losing 53-48. Mitchell Saxen was held to four points against Houston but bounced back to tie his career high with 19 points on Wednesday night.

“We kind of just needed to rediscover the toughness that we have and the ability to grind teams down for 40 minutes,” Saxen said after the needed win.

The strength of the lineup will be in the backcourt, where 6-2 senior Logan Johnson and 6-6 senior Alex Ducas provide a steady handle and long-range effectiveness.

Much will depend on how well 6-10 forward Mitchell Saxen fills in up front for the departed Matthias Tass. Bennett also landed a transfer with potential in Mason Forbes, a 6-9 super senior who started for Harvard.

St. Mary’s has legitimate toughness, and they can contend with top talent.  They can contend with SDSU if the Aztecs are off balance.  They will make the Aztecs work for this win, and the Aztecs won’t win if they play sloppy.

What Will Happen

The oddsmakers are saying St. Mary’s will win.  That said, the Aztecs have a lot of advantages over the Gaels.  This game is going to be a serious grind, and the Aztecs will have to dig deep. The Gaels risk coming alive in the second half so elite defense, which the Aztecs have, is critical to stop a Gael runaway, which they can do.

Despite the Gaels’ ferocity, the Aztecs have stellar depth, and they will  barely escape with the victory in Phoenix.

Final Score: SDSU 63,  St. Mary’s 60
