It can sometimes be difficult to quantify, let alone appreciate, the work that a quality interior lineman can do for a defense, which makes the contributions of one Scott Matlock, the next player on our preseason countdown of Mountain West football’s best, all the more notable.
The Boise State defensive tackle first made waves as an all-conference honorable mention back in 2020, then he followed that up by earning a second-team nod in 2021 with 40 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. That provided some much-needed help for a pass rush typically accustomed to big performances from its edge rushers and, if that wasn’t enough, he also blocked a field goal and caught a red zone touchdown.
Other players on the Broncos defense might capture more headlines this upcoming season, but few could be as impactful as the Homedale, Idaho native who figures to be in the thick of the action on many downs.
