Speed kills. Byrd has it.

Mountain West Wire’s 2022 preseason honors:

All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshman of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year

The Mountain West has been blessed with an inordinate amount of top-tier specialists over the last handful of years. Our pick as the conference’s preseason special teams player of the year, San Diego State’s Jordan Byrd, is no exception.

Considering how important field position is to the Aztecs’ best-laid plans, Byrd may have had the best overall season of his four years on the Mesa in 2021. He led all qualifying returners in the Mountain West with an average of 27.3 yards per kick return, which included a 100-yard score against Utah, and also racked up 190 yards on 27 punt returns, as well.

If you think watching the Aztecs can’t be fun, think again. Just wait and see what Byrd does next fall with the ball in his hands.

Also received votes: Jonah Dalmas, Boise State; Cayden Camper, Colorado State; Aaron Rodriguez, New Mexico; Matthew Shipley, Hawaii; Brandon Talton, Nevada
