Mountain West Wire’s 2022 preseason honors:
All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshman of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year
It takes a certain kind of hard-nosed athlete to thrive with the San Diego State Aztecs, which explains why quarterback Braxton Burmeister was our staff’s selection as the Mountain West’s preseason newcomer of the year.
Burmeister arrived at San Diego State after previous stops at Oregon and Virginia Tech with 20 career starts under his belt. That includes 12 starts in a 2021 season where he dealt with a litany of ailments, mainly to his upper body and shoulder, and still managed to throw for 1,960 yards and 14 touchdowns with four interceptions in 255 attempts.
He’s also proven that he can make plays with his legs, too, scoring twice on the ground and racking up 706 rushing yards after adjusting for sacks. If he can stay healthy and play at his peak, Burmeister could easily lead the Aztecs back to the top of the West division.
