Mock draft season

The NFL Draft season is year-round and we will be diving in now that the college season is in the rearview mirror. What we will be doing in this space is to round up the mock drafts once a week to see where the Mountain West players are being projected.

One player who is making the rise is San Diego State’s Cameron Thomas who is getting some first-round projections,

Players that are appearing in these mock drafts that are about two to three rounds are Nevada QB Carson Strong, Colorado State tight end Trey McBride, Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma, plus others.

Nevada Football: The Draft Stock of Carson Strong

This will be just some of our NFL Draft coverage which will include draft profiles and player-specific articles as well.

These will be organized by date, publication and a blurb or two.

Mel Kiper, Jr. (ESPN+)

Kiper did his first mock draft that is just one round and there are two Mountain West who make the cut and that is a mild surprise.

No. 29. Kansas City Chiefs – Cameron Thomas, DE, San Diego State

He lined up at both tackle and end for the Aztecs and created havoc at both spots. He had 11.5 sacks and a whopping 27 total tackles for loss in 2021. He’s powerful in the run game and has some bend as a pass-rusher. He’d be a menace for offensive tackles if he lined up next to Chris Jones.

No. 32. Green Bay Packers – Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State

Robert Tonyan snagged 11 touchdowns in 2020, but he tore his ACL in October and is a free agent in the offseason. The Packers could bring him back on a short-term deal, or they could find a long-term solution with McBride, the draft’s best tight end. He caught 90 passes for 1,121 yards in 2021, and he’s also a good blocker.

College Football News

Carson Strong is a late first-round pick to the Detroit Lions. The pick is not set in stone as the Los Angeles Rams who traded the pick to Detroit is not set as they are still in the playoffs.

No. 23 Arizona Cardinals – Cameron Thomas, San Diego State, DT

Chandler Jones is still one of the NFL’s best pass rushers, but the Cardinals need a better bookend to pair with him. The Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, Thomas is an athletic, physical defender who excels as both a pass rusher and a run-stopper.

No. 63 Denver Broncos – Carson Strong, Nevada, QB

No. 65 Jacksonville Jaguars – Trey McBride, Colorado State, TE

No. 66 Detroit Lions – Romeo Doubs, Nevada, WR

No. 85 New England Patriots – Chad Muma, Wyoming, LB

No. 86 Las Vegas Raiders – Khalil Shakir, Boise State, WR

No. 9 Denver Broncos – Carson Strong, Nevada, QB

The Broncos have their pick of passers with the ninth pick in this 2022 4-Round NFL Mock Draft. There’s no denying that Nevada QB Carson Strong has one of the strongest arms in the class. He might not fit the current mold of a mobile quarterback, but he’s far from the statue he’s oft-portrayed as. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Strong emerge from the Senior Bowl with a clean bill of health and the advantage in this quarterback class.

No. 29 Kansas City Chiefs – Cameron Thomas, San Diego State, EDGE

San Diego State’s Cameron Thomas has earned comparisons to Hutchinson and Wisconsin-era J.J. Watt with his phenomenal power and explosive first step. The Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year can be a Day 1 starter for a Chiefs defense that needs a disruptive playmaker.

No. 46 Minnesota Vikings – Chad Muma, Wyoming, LB

No. 61 Kansas City Chiefs – Romeo Doubs, Nevada, WR

No. 79 Los Angeles Chargers – Trey McBride, Colorado State, TE

No. 95 Tennessee Titans – Cole Turner, Nevada, WR

No. 140 Tennessee Titans – Khalil Shakir, Boise State, WR

The Athletic

47. Indianapolis Colts – Carson Strong, Nevada, QB

51. Philadelphia Eagles – Chad Muma, LB, Wyoming

55. Arizona Cardinals – Cameron Thomas, edge, San Diego State
