7.) Fresno State Bulldogs – 28 points
Fresno State is yet to play in 2022 after their past three games didn’t happen due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs host San Jose State in their first game of the Calender year on Tuesday before hitting the road to meet UNLV on Thursday.
8.) Air Force Falcons – 17 points
Playing in Colorado Springs could be a daunting task this season — the Falcons already beat Utah State in their home arena and took their inter-state rivals to the final buzzer last week without leading scorer A.J. Walker. Without Walker, freshman Ethan Taylor scored 19 points, and Carter Murphy, Camden Vander Zwaag, and Jake Heidbreider scored double-figures.
Air Force hosts Nevada on the 15th, trying to beat the Wolf Pack for consecutive seasons. The development of Walker’s status will be worth monitoring heading into the Nevada game.
9.) UNLV Runnin Rebels – 15 points
The Runnin’ Rebels didn’t play last week after games against Air Force and San Jose State got postponed. UNLV faces a stretch of three games in eight days, hosting New Mexico and Fresno State, and a road tout in Viejas Arena.
10.) San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State’s last game came on December 21st in their loss to Santa Clara before taking the court against D2 opponent Bethesda University. That game allowed the starters to ease back after the long-hiatus — no starter played above 21 minutes. Perhaps a sign of things to come? Gifted freshman M.J. Amey scored 32 points on 13-21 shooting in SJSU’s 75 point win. However, there’s no easing back to league play, as matchups against Fresno State and Colorado State await.
11.) New Mexico
The Lobos blown lead to Utah State isn’t ideal but shows marked improvement over last year’s team. Star guard Jamal Mashburn Jr poured in 29 points on 8-17 shooting, while Javonte Johnson scored a career-high 23 points. However, starting forward Emmanuel Kuac broke his leg in the game and will miss the remainder of the season. TCU transfer Taryn Todd could pick up bigger minutes without Kuac.
