A danger downfield.
As you might expect in a preseason countdown of the Mountain West’s best players, some units are well-represented along the way. Such is the case for the San Diego State defense, one of the best units anywhere in the country over the last few years, and safety Patrick McMorris, whose standout play landed him a spot on this year’s top 50.
McMorris arrived on the Mesa from just up the 5 in Santa Ana, though it took him a couple of years to carve a substantial role as part of what is typically a very deep secondary. After contributing mostly on special teams in 2019 and holding on to a depth role in 2020, 2021 marked his first full season as a starter and made it worth the wait. McMorris became the team’s first AZTEC position player since Nat Berhe in 2013 to land a spot on the postseason first-team all-conference defense, leading the defense with 90 tackles and adding nine pass breakups, 2.5 tackles for loss, and four interceptions.
Most recently, he was named a preseason co-defensive player of the year and a preseason all-conference selection, so the expectations are as high as they’ve ever been for an Aztecs defensive back. Given the track record behind his rise, though, it’s tough to bet against McMorris meeting them.
