“He has changed the way we see punters.”

Frisco, TX – Something unprecedented happened during the 2021 Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl.  Something greater than quarterback Lucas Johnson’s dazzling performance.  Something even better than Jesse Matthews’ eleven receptions.

Something even better than redemption after a scathing loss against a beatable opponent in the 2021 Mountain West Championship while 20 Aztecs were placed into quarantine.

Something even better than an unprecedented 12-win Aztec football season.

What happened you ask?

A new G.O.A.T. was born.

Matt Araiza, a.k.a. the “punt god,” the “leg of steel” and “the anomaly” became the NCAA’s greatest punter OF ALL TIME.

Review of Records Araiza Has Broken:

Matt Araiza set a new all-time Football Bowl Subdivision record for yards per punt averaging 51.19 yards per punt, surpassing Texas A&M Brayden Mann’s all-time record of 50.98

Araiza shattered the all-time record of (32) 50+yard punts in a single season, by achieving 39.

Araiza broke the all-time record for 60+ yard punts in a single season by achieving 18.

Araiza managed six punts over 70 yards, and two in excess of 80 yards.

Araiza had the season long punt of 86 yards against San Jose State.

By now, it’s well known that Matt Araiza was this year’s Ray Guy Award winner, but many don’t know that after Marshall Faulk was denied the Heisman Trophy as well as the Doak Walker Award twice, Matt Araiza became the first Aztec to win a national college football award.

Araiza is a remarkable weapon, with the ability to effectively “flip the field.” Even if he is punting from the back of his own end zone, he can land it on the edge of your end zone.  Hang time?  He couldn’t care less about it and for good reason: why would he want an opponent to square his shoulders?  The more you learn about Araiza, the more you realize he is really, really smart.

He will undoubtedly grace the halls of the San Diego State Aztecs Athletics Hall of Fame, and there is increasing speculation that his jersey will be deservedly retired, to ensure that no future Aztec will wear #2 in honor of punt god Matt Araiza.

There’s a good possibility that Araiza will be a first round draft pick.  What’s more, it is well known that Bill Belichick has a penchant for left-footed punters and kickers.

Wouldn’t it be something if Araiza was selected in the first round of the 2022  NFL draft by the New England Patriots?  Time will reveal.

Either way: the punt god has indelibly made Aztecs sports history.  The Aztec Nation congratulates Matt Araiza on his historic record-breaking season that will likely stand for many years to come.
