Two big brands are staying

Conference realignment is always a topic and the Mountain West is in the thick of it with reports that Colorado State and Air Force are on their way out to the AAC.

In better news, Yahoo’s Pete Thamel is reporting that San Diego State and Boise State are not leaving the Mountain West.

While this is amazing news for the league in the short term, but long term these two schools are possibly waiting for something better to come along. The Big 12 has already hinted they want to add even more teams even after snagging BYU, Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston.

One of those teams is Boise State and maybe San Diego State. It makes total sense to not make a move to the AAC now when the Big 12 could be calling within the next two years as they get back to 12 teams.

In our recent podcast with Matt Brown who runs the Extra Points newsletter, he feels that Boise State is just waiting for that invite from a bigger conference, but he also notes that it might be Memphis and not San Diego State is in line for the next round of Big 12 invites that seems likely to be just two schools to get back to 14 members.

In the short-term this is good for the Mountain West and we will see if there is anything that Craig Thompson can do to keep this league from losing any marquee members.
