How many teams this week

Who is going to the postseason?

With these latest bowl projections, we are still going big with eight Mountain West teams going bowling.

However, the one team that barely made the cut is San Jose State who did not play well vs. Western Michigan in the 23-3 loss and there is an injury concern with quarterback Nick Starkel.

The Spartans have a chance to get back on track as they take on New Mexico State and then Colorado State which could be winnable games. The matchup vs. the Rams could prove tough if there is no Starkel as Colorado State has showed up the past two weeks with a win over Toledo and hanging in until the end against No. 5 Iowa.

As for the rest of the league, there are plenty of options for some solid bowl opponents against the AAC and a pair of Pac-12 teams. A few of the bowl spots are either at-large or ones where there might not be enough teams to fill their required spots, and that is how the Mountain West can get beyond six.

One game this week that could really shake up the Mountain West bowl scenario is if Notre Dame beats Cincinnati which would help Fresno State — or any Mountain West team vying for the title — get one step closer to possibly being the Group of 5 representative. Coastal Carolina is still ranked ahead of Fresno State at the moment, but it is a long season and going undefeated is hard.
