Can the Mountain West get two teams in next week?
After getting an unexpected test against the lowly UNLV Rebels on Friday night, the Fresno State Bulldogs found a way to move up in the coaches poll and Associated Press Top 25, anyway, after the rest of college football experienced a lot of upheaval.
Fresno State moved up to #21 in the coaches poll and #18 in the AP poll as the week’s results forced three and four teams, respectively, from the rankings. San Diego State, one of two undefeated teams left in the Mountain West, also took advantage of the discord in voters’ eyes following a 48-21 romp over FCS Towson, jumping to 29th and 28th in the respective polls. While finding room to improve their standing may not happen without further aftershocks across the national landscape, there is the possibility that both the Aztecs and Bulldogs could be ranked when they meet in Carson on October 30.
Interestingly, the Mountain West’s other undefeated team, 4-0 Wyoming, didn’t receive the same level of love from the pollsters. That probably has to do with the Cowboys’ struggles against UConn on Saturday afternoon, though the Pokes did receive one vote in the coaches poll. They’ll get a chance to win over the skeptics when they travel to Air Force next weekend and, if things break in their favor, when they travel to Fresno for a date with the Bulldogs two weeks from now.
