2021 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #5, San Jose State DE Cade Hall
Mountain West football’s defensive player of 2020 is the top-ranked San Jose State Spartan on our countdown of the conference’s best.
Is a repeat performance in order?
The San Jose State Spartans had plenty of heavy hitters in Derrick Odum’s defense last fall, but no one on that side of the ball drove the team’s push to the top of the Mountain West quite like the next player on our annual countdown of the conference’s top performers.
It was defensive end Cade Hall, after all, who emerged as the Mountain West’s defensive player of the year in 2020. In his first two years as a starter, Hall had picked up 12.5 tackles for loss and four sacks across 2018 and 2019, but he led the unit’s big leap forward by finishing second among Mountain West defenders with 12 tackles for loss and first with ten sacks, the latter of which was done in the fewest games among the four FBS players to crack double digits.
Now a senior, Hall figures to once again be one of the conference’s most prominent playmakers. He’s already picked up preseason all-American accolades and has been tabbed by both our staff and the conference media as the Mountain West’s preseason defensive player of the year, so he’ll be the proverbial tip of the Spartans’ spear as they look to defend their title.

DE #92 Cade Hall (@cade_hall97) was a 1-man wrecking crew in the conference championship game. With relentless effort + outstanding use of hands, Hall was the epitome of a finisher while earning DPOY award from the @MountainWest.#NFLPABowl pic.twitter.com/nzmMjgzqS2
