2021 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #8, Colorado State TE Trey McBride

The Colorado State tight end is the highest-ranked Rams player on this year’s list of Mountain West football’s best.

At the line or down the seam, he’s hard to stop.

It isn’t often that players make the jump from very good to great without a lot of people noticing, but the next player on our annual countdown of Mountain West football’s top performers still had a habit of making you sit forward in your seat if you paid attention to one of the season’s shortest campaigns.

Trey McBride only had the chance to play in four games as Colorado State’s season got hamstrung by COVID and more, but no tight end in the country — not Cole Turner, Kyle Pitts, or Jalen Wydermyer — averaged more than his 5.5 receptions and 82.5 yards per game. McBride also trailed only Air Force’s Kyle Patterson by averaging 15 yards per catch and he scored four touchdowns despite a quarterback shuffle and a slate of opponents who by and large could boast of tough defenses to crack.

Oh, and he can block a little, too.

With a full season ahead of him now in 2021, McBride has already received hype as one of college football’s top NFL prospects as his position. Whether he can carry the Rams back to bowl eligibility and beyond remains to be seen, but he’ll certainly relish the opportunity to push or carry a few more defenders, at least, along the way.
