2021 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #44, Air Force RB Brad Roberts
The Air Force fullback is the first Falcon on our countdown of Mountain West football’s best performers heading into 2021.
No fun for defenders here.
Few things in college football are more aesthetically pleasing than a triple-option offense running right at the heart of a defense, especially when they at defense knows it’s coming and still can’t stop it, which made the next player on our list of Mountain West football’s top athletes, Air Force’s Brad Roberts, an especially satisfying breakout.
It wasn’t totally clear who would help to shoulder the Falcons’ run-heavy burden at the beginning of 2020, but Roberts erased a lot of the concern by running for 103 yards on just ten carries in a season-opening victory against rival Navy and, though he missed two games last fall, rarely let up when he was on the field. In all, Roberts had just 64 carries but averaged a whopping 7.2 yards per carry, buoyed by the fact that 20.3% of his rushing attempts went for at least ten yards.
With a new offensive line in front of him and a still-developing quarterback under center, Roberts could end up being one of the most important players in the conference this fall. If he can continue acting as Air Force’s sledgehammer, watch out.
