2021 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #45, New Mexico QB Terry Wilson
The former Kentucky quarterback transferred to New Mexico this off-season and now lands on our list of Mountain West football’s top players.
The Mountain West’s best incoming transfer this off-season?
For the most part, the players who make up our annual top 50 are those who’ve been around the Mountain West for a little while. That makes the next athlete on this year’s countdown, New Mexico quarterback Terry Wilson, a very rare deviation from the norm.
Though he has yet to take a live snap for the Lobos, Wilson transferred from Kentucky this off-season and brings some hefty credentials with him. Before he became the Wildcats’ starter in 2018, they had often been a decent-but-not-great SEC team at best but, that year, Wilson led the program to its first ten-win season since 1977, snapping a historic losing streak against Florida in the process, and its first top 25 finish since 1984.
Though hampered by injury for most of 2019, Wilson rebounded in 2020 to complete 62.5% of his passes for 1,187 yards and seven touchdowns in ten games, including a Gator Bowl victory over North Carolina State. In all, he finished 17-8 as a starter for Kentucky and left Lexington as the only quarterback in program history with over 3,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards.
While there’s still a competition to win in fall camp, there’s no doubt Wilson will bring instant credibility to the Lobos offense if he is named QB1.
