Don’t overlook this big dude in the trenches.
It’s often easy to overlook how good offensive linemen can be because it’s harder to measure just how much they contribute, but the first Boise State player on our countdown of Mountain West football’s top athlete, Jake Stetz, makes that task a little easier.
Stetz broke into the starting lineup two seasons ago and has more or less been one of the best guards in the country ever since. According to Pro Football Focus, only Parker Ferguson graded higher than Stetz among Group of 5 linemen in 2019 and he didn’t miss a beat in 2020.
Though the Broncos had to battle through injuries on offense, they still managed to move the ball well enough to get back to another championship game, especially through the air, which is the biggest reason why PFF also named Stetz a preseason first-team interior lineman heading into this fall.
Assuming Boise State can benefit from better injury luck in 2021, you’ll want to do what you can to keep an eye on Stetz. Khalil Shakir, George Holani and Hank Bachmeier might make the highlight reel, but they can’t do their job unless the star guard does his first.
Boise RG Jake Stetz is known for his mobility, pulling in front of runs to the left and comboing effectively to the 2nd level to negate LB/DB. But he is willing to dump any DL to the ground if they're ready at the snap. #SnapScout22 pic.twitter.com/XSXOn5PuKO
