2021 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #48, New Mexico C Kyle Stapley
The Lobos center cracks our countdown of Mountain West football’s best players for the first time.
Some overdue recognition.
A quality center can’t be overlooked when it comes to what makes a football team successful and the New Mexico Lobos have one of the Mountain West’s best in Kyle Stapley, the next athlete on our annual countdown of the conference’s top performers.
2020 marked Stapley’s third year as a full-time starter for UNM and he was on the field for 520 total snaps, anchoring a offensive line that went into the season with a few unknown quantities but ultimately held its own. Seeing as, among other things, New Mexico finished 30th nationally in Line Yards Per Carry, 36th in Opportunity Rate, and 19th in Stuff Rate allowed, it’s unsurprising that Stapley earned an all-conference honorable mention for the second straight year.
Back for one last ride in 2021, Stapley should be in a position to finish his collegiate career as one of the program’s best offensive linemen ever. After all, what the position lacks in flash, he’s more than made up for with quiet consistency.
