Utah State Football: Savon Scarver is MWwire’s 2021 Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year
The Utah State Aggies’ electric return specialist is our staff’s pick as Mountain West football’s preseason defensive player of the year.
A rare game-changer in the Mountain West.
Mountain West Wire’s 2021 preseason honors:
All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshmen of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year
The Utah State Aggies had a rough go of things in 2020, but one detail which never changed is that Savon Scarver, our staff’s selection as Mountain West football’s preseason special teams player of the year, remains one of the nation’s most dynamic playmakers.
Though he only had the chance to return ten kicks in 2020, Scarver maximized those limited opportunities more than just about anyone in college football by averaging 31.7 yards per return. Among 79 FBS players with at least ten kick returns last season, that ranked fourth overall.
Scarver also brought one of those kicks back for a touchdown, the fourth straight season in which he’s done that at least once. Whether opponents will give him a chance to do that one or two more times remains to be seen, but that kind of decision is all of the respect a player like him could ask for.
