Mountain West Wire’s 2021 preseason honors:

All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshmen of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year

Despite a great deal of shuffling among the Mountain West’s coordinators through the off-season, our pick as last year’s top assistant coach and our preseason pick to be the best in 2021 is one and the same.

Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Mumme got the most out of the offensive talent afforded to him in 2020, shepherding quarterback Carson Strong, tight end Cole Turner, and wide receiver Romeo Doubs to breakout campaigns and averaging 6.46 yards per play, the second-best figure in the Mountain West.

More importantly, Mumme’s Air Raid knew how to light up the scoreboard and averaged a conference-high 2.72 points per offensive possession. With everyone back for another ride — including wide receiver Elijah Cooks, who missed nearly all of 2020 with injury — the sky is the limit for Nevada’s attack.

Also received votes: John Budmayr, Colorado State OC; Spencer Danielson, Boise State DC; Rocky Long, New Mexico DC; Tim Plough, Boise State OC; Tim Polasek, Wyoming OC; Anthony Tucker, Utah State OC; Derek Warehime, New Mexico OC
