‘Cuse vs. Aztecs
San Diego State opens up its NCAA Tournament by taking on Syracuse from the ACC and the Aztecs are expected to win as a slight favorite over the Orange.
This game is featured in a prime spot by not only being on CBS and the primetime game but it gets the top crew as well, so a lot of people will be tuning into this game.
This game will feature a lot of defense as that is what these teams are known for. However, that does not mean there are not scorers on the sidelines, and specifically with the Aztecs who shoot well from downtown.
Among their many three-point shooters, SDSU hosts two nasty arc aces. Senior Jordan Schakel and grad transfer “don’t call me sparkplug” Terrell Gomez are ice cold three-point scorers with mind-bending skills. Schakel might have THE BEST catch-and-shoot ability in the NCAA, and if the mood catches him he’s good for 5, 6 even 8 rainbows. Gomez has 30-foot range with a unique rapid-fire release that augments his modest stature. When he’s hot he will wreck your world. It’s gonna rain in Indy.
The Orange also are a team that shoot the ball well from deep but they are a bit more than just a squad that shoots it from three-point range.
Syracuse has gotten a bit of a reputation these past two years for being a three-point shooting team. And while they do that, it’s also an overblown assumption. The Orange are typically at their best when they drive the lane and create open shots for their guards beyond the arc.
So it’s crucial for Quincy Guerrier to both have a good game on offense, and find a way to stay out of foul trouble. We don’t have much in the way of experienced bigs this year, so he’s arguably the most important player for SU.
