Perhaps we should have seen him coming.

Perhaps no situation for a Mountain West football player is tougher than having to step into a role previously occupied by a NFL Draft pick. You could say it’s doubly so when two players from one unit land in the pros, which makes the next player on our annual list of Mountain West football’s top performers uniquely qualified to be here.

Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma, after all, had to lead a unit inherited from Logan Wilson and Cassh Maluia. In retrospect, after Muma averaged 11.8 tackles per game and picked up eight tackles for loss, three sacks, and a first-team defense nod from Pro Football Focus in 2020, we should’ve known that everything would be fine.

Now the leader of one of college football’s deepest and toughest defenses, it’s not hard to imagine Muma possibly following Wilson and Maluia to the next level, though Pokes fans will certainly hope he can lead them to a conference title before getting there.
