The Rebels poor shooting and inability to get stops on defensive let them down once again in Thursdays Quarterfinal matchup.
Whatever Craig Smith said to his team at halftime of Utah States win over UNLV definitely paid off. The Aggies came out and flexed their muscles, especially late in the second half to send UNLV out of the Mountain West Tournament before the semifinals for the 7th consecutive year. The game was tied after twenty minutes of play and then two completely different teams came out of the locker rooms for the second frame.
Utah State started the last twenty minutes on fire and never looked back. The Rebels slowly slipped into their usual selves, unable to hit shots or get defensive stops. Utah State pulled away late and made sure it would make it to their third straight semifinal in the Mountain West Tournament under Craig Smith, who is 7-0 in this tournament since taking over the program.
The two time Mountain West champions were led by Marco Anthony, who had a double-double(15 points, 13 rebounds) Justin Bean (10 points, 5 rebounds) Rollie Worster( 14 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists)and Neemias Queta(18 points, 12 rebounds).
The Rebels were able to control these four high scorers for the Aggies in the first half. To add insult to injury, late in the second half Mbacke Diong was helped off the court, unable to out any pressure on his left leg.
70 is the magic number
12-2 were the Rebels when they held their opponent under 70 points,0-13 when they all allowed more then 70.
