A new twist on a familiar tradition.

Fans of college football on Christmas Eve, rejoice!

In one of the first signs that Mountain West football may be part of a larger postseason shuffle, it was announced this afternoon that the Hawaii Warriors will square off with the Houston Cougars in the New Mexico Bowl on December 24. The game will kick off at 12:30 PM PT/10:30 AM HT and air on ESPN.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise as the Warriors finished the regular season just 4-4, good for a fifth-place finish in the conference standings, but previous reports from Stadium’s Brett McMurphy that the AAC has already finalized their entire bowl picture — which includes a now-confirmed matchup between Nevada and Tulane in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl — and that three ACC teams have already said they will forgo any postseason bid created the spots necessary to include more than what Mountain West fans might have originally expected.

It will also make for one last unusual wrinkle in what has been a very strange college football season. The New Mexico Bowl, which usually takes place in Albuquerque, has been relocated to Frisco, Texas this year because of restrictions related to combating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
