The weekend kicks off with a big time tilt.
The Colorado State Rams and Boise State Broncos begin the third week of Mountain West football with quite a bit on the line Thursday night.
Colorado State bounced back from a disappointing performance in their season opener in about the best way possible, claiming the Bronze Boot with a fairly convincing victory over Wyoming last week. They did so in no small part thanks to the fact that their potent offense was finally made whole: Patrick O’Brien made his first start of the year and Dante Wright returned to action after being a late scratch against Fresno State, and the two connected ten times for 146 yards through the air against the Cowboys.
The defense also came alive in the Border War, as well, racking up 14 tackles for loss and six sacks in what was arguably their most disruptive performance in two years. They hope to get that level of production once more against a Broncos offense that was both depleted and harried in a shocking blowout loss to BYU last week. Without quarterback Hank Bachmeier, running back George Holani and others, a shaky situation was made worse when backup Jack Sears was knocked out early, forcing the defense to shoulder most of the load while third-stringer Cade Fennegan struggled to find his footing.
That backfield situation is still up in the air, as head coach Bryan Harsin would not indicate who might start under center throughout the week. The thinking is that Bachmeier will probably go, which would be a major boost to an attack that averaged just 4.77 yards per play, a large chunk of which came after the game was well out of reach.
Is this the year that Colorado State finally breaks through and snaps Boise State’s long win streak in this series, or will the Broncos defend the blue and find a way back into the win column? Tuning in is the only way to find out.
