A sneaky interesting game on tap.
The San Jose State Spartans and New Mexico Lobos may not headline the weekend in Mountain West football, but there’s plenty of intrigue for the real football heads out there in this Week 9 matchup.
The Lobos haven’t even played yet this year but their season has the feel of an odyssey after seeing their first game canceled and their second moved to the home stadium of their opponent. Head coach Danny Gonzales surely won’t let his athletes feel sorry for their plight, however, with new defensive coordinator Rocky Long set to commandeer his newest version of the 3-3-5 defense and offensive coordinator Derek Warehime plotting how best to attack a Spartans defense that held run-heavy Air Force in check last Saturday.
San Jose State, for their part, weren’t quite as explosive out of the gate as they were throughout 2019, but their passing game behind new quarterback Nick Starkel did enough to take advantage of a shorthanded Falcons secondary. That could be the case again with a handful of new faces set to take on big roles in the UNM defensive backfield, especially since they still have to prove they can do better than last fall, when the Lobos pretty clearly possessed the worst pass defense in the conference.
All in all, this should be a fun and competitive contrast of styles, so be sure not to miss it.
