By

Mountain West Conference kicked off on 24th October 2020 in the Western USA. Some of the teams that won during the opening week are San Jose State, San Diego State, Nevada, Hawai’i and Boise State. Here are some highlights of what happened in Week 1 and what to expect in Week 2.

Week 1

Boise State won this game 42 against Utah State’s 13. This was the 19th consecutive time that Boise State has won an opening match at home. Some of the standout players for Boise State were sophomore Hank Bachmeier and George Holani. Nevada overcame Wyoming 37-34 after the game went into overtime. Carson Strong produced a powerful performance by completing his second straight 400-yard passes. He is now the 6th player in Mountain West to record consecutive 400-yard passes. Hawai’i earned their fourth consecutive opening game of the season and the first under their new coach Todd Graham after beating Fresno State 34-19. San Jose State’s 17 – 6 victory ended the unbeaten nine-game streak that Air Force had been enjoying.

It was the second-longest active winning streak nationally. San Jose State’s victory was also the first time they had won an opening game since they joined the conference in 2013. San Diego State beat UNLV 34-6 to register its first win under coach Brady Hoke who was making a second return to the side. The first week showed how entertaining the Mountain West Conference can be. Week 2

This week will see Colorado State face off with Fresno State on 29 October, Hawai’i will face Wyoming on Friday 30, while Boise State will face Air Force on Saturday 31. The other games to be played on Saturday 31 are New Mexico vs San Jose State, San Diego State vs Utah State, and Nevada vs UNLV. When Air Force plays host to Boise State on Saturday, they will have a chance of ending a winning streak.

Air Force has won 9 home games consecutively, while Boise has a 10 game unbeaten streak. Therefore, this means that one of these two teams will see their winning streak come to an end. The meeting between Nevada and UNLV will be first played at the modern state of the art Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. San Jose State will be looking to make it 2 wins in a row, after emerging winners in their first game against Air Force.

Their second game against Utah State has been moved to the CEFCU Stadium in San Jose as a result of the continued prevalence rate of the coronavirus in Bernalillo County. This should provide San Jose with at least some home advantage on which they can build on against their opponents.
