A critical game for both teams.
The Fresno State Bulldogs will look to get back on track while the Colorado State Rams hope to start their belated season with a win on the road this Thursday.
For the Bulldogs, a couple of big questions remain unanswered. First, can the offense eliminate its big-time mistakes? They averaged a healthy six yards per play against Hawaii last Saturday but turned the ball over four times, which turned into 17 Warriors points.
On defense, new coordinator William Inge will hope to get a better showing from his 4-2-5 attack after allowing 6.57 yards per play in the opener. That the Rams and new head coach Steve Addazio aren’t fully committed to incumbent quarterback Patrick O’Brien is a narrative thread worth watching, too, as we might see Temple transfer Todd Centeio play a role for the Colorado State offense.
And what will that Rams offense look like? Now that Warren Jackson is already preparing for next year’s NFL Draft instead, it remains to be seen whether Addazio and new offensive coordinator Joey Lynch will lean on a ground game that was explosive and erratic in equal parts last fall. That was a hallmark of the new coach’s teams at Boston College, but wide receivers Dante Wright and Nate Craig-Myers are a potent duo that should give the Rams plenty of reason to air it out.
Overall, this game has all the makings of a shootout, just like last year’s matchup between these two teams. With the national spotlight all to themselves, we’ll see who puts themselves into a position to hang around in the race to the top of the Mountain West.
