2020 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #3, Boise State WR Khalil Shakir
The Boise State wide receiver flew under the radar, but he’s the top Bronco on our list of Mountain West football’s best athletes.
Another elite receiver on the blue.
Sometimes, the raw statistics don’t always tell the full story of a football player’s season. That’s definitely the case for the next player on our countdown of Mountain West football’s top performers.
Boise State wide receiver Khalil Shakir saw plenty of action in his first full year, finishing fourth among sophomore pass catchers in the Group of 5 with 60 receptions and tenth in the Mountain West with 872 receiving yards while scoring six times. However, of the 14 Mountain West wide receivers with at least 50 catches, only fellow Broncos John Hightower had a higher rate of plays that went for at least 20 yards than Shakir’s 26.98%.
If that wasn’t enough, Shakir’s performance out of the slot was so good that Pro Football Focus graded him out as the best player at any position returning to the conference in 2020, placing himself alongside CeeDee Lamb (a 2020 first-round NFL Draft pick) and Ja’Marr Chase (last year’s Biletnikoff Award winner).
Heading into his junior season, the six-foot, 190-pound Shakir could be in line for a few more targets per game now that Hightower has moved on to the NFL ranks. He’s already getting buzz as perhaps the conference’s best draft prospect for 2021, too, but there’s little doubt that, for now, his focus is feasting on unprepared defenders throughout the conference.
