2020 Mountain West Football Top 50 Players: #2, Air Force QB Donald Hammond III
The Air Force Falcons quarterback was our top-ranked player at the position on our list of Mountain West football’s best athletes.
Will we see him in 2020?
It’s tough to think of what might have been before a college football season gets underway, but right now there’s no choice when it comes to the next player on our countdown of Mountain West football’s top performers.
Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III took a huge step forward that just so happened to coincide with arguably the Falcons’ best season in two decades, racking up 1,869 yards of total offense at a 8.06 yards per play clip that was the best figure in the conference since 2016. On the ground, he racked up 553 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, the latter of which tied him with Fresno State’s Ronnie Rivers as the most in the Mountain West. Through the air, he averaged 11.9 yards per attempt, the highest figure among Air Force quarterbacks of at least the last 40 years (the official Falcons record book tracks yards per completion rather than yards per attempt, where Hammond’s 23.5 YPC average ranked fourth all-time), with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear likely that we will see Hammond on the field for the Falcons anytime this fall, as the Air Force Academy released a statement back in July which announced that he was not in good standing. If 2019 was the last time we’ll see him suit up, at least fans will have some very strong memories of an epic season.
