More than just a big-play threat.
Last year, the San Jose State Spartans had their best football season since 2015 for a number of reasons but, outside of their departed Offensive Player of the Year, perhaps no one had a bigger impact on their ability to take a step forward than the next player on our countdown of the Mountain West’s top performers.
After a modest freshman campaign in 2017, Tre Walker first emerged as a big-play threat the following year by finishing second with a 18.3 yards per catch average. In 2019, however, he put up the best campaign by any SJSU wide receiver since Chandler Jones in 2013, finishing with 79 catches for a conference-best 1,161 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Mountain West with 19 catches of 20-plus yards. By the end of the year, he’d joined Jones as the only Spartans pass catchers to earn a spot on the all-conference first team.
His quarterback of the past couple years, Josh Love, has moved on for 2020, but Walker remains as the number one target among a deep and talented bunch. There’s a reasonable chance that he leaves the program as its all-time leader in receiving yards, too, so despite the focus he’ll receive, don’t be shocked if he spends his last year in blue and yellow continuing to frustrate opposing defensive backs every week.
