What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Early in the week we will look at odds and early lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook.

Make sure to read until the end to read how to test your knowledge against me all season long in making some bets.

Utah State @ Boise State (-14.5, O/U 58)

Every game this week has question marks due to the coronavirus. Boise State should be fine, but Utah State has questions that need to be answered. In the last seven matchups between these two schools, they’ve only combined to score below 55 points once. Boise will always be a top contender until proven otherwise and they should prevail here.

Pick: Over 58

Wyoming @ Nevada (+3, O/U 50.5)

The Cowboys managed to slow down the Wolf Pack offense last year. It’s questionable if they can do it with the same success this year though. Wyoming is going to play two quarterbacks this year and they’ve had a couple key defenders opt out of the season. Wyoming and Nevada are on upward trends, but the Cowboys are farther ahead than the Wolf Pack. The Cowboys should cover here.

Pick: Wyoming -3

Hawaii @ Fresno State (-6, O/U 64.5)

The Mountain West had six coaching changes this offseason and week one features three games with both teams having new coaching staffs. Nick Rolovich left for Wazzu, with Todd Graham replacing him and Kalen DeBoer steps in at Fresno State. DeBoer has developed potent offenses wherever he has been and Graham, a defensive-minded coach, has had his best seasons with a high powered offense. Two high powered offenses means go for the over.

Pick: Over 64.5

New Mexico @ Colorado State (-18.5, O/U 60.5)

Another matchup of schools with new coaching staffs. New Mexico is led by Danny Gonzales and Colorado State is led by Steve Addazio. The Lobos are going away from the triple option and toward more of a no huddle, spread scheme. The Rams are also going to play with tempo. This seems like it will come down to which defense breaks first.

Pick: Over 60.5

Air Force @ San Jose State (+7, O/U 60.5)

Air Force crushed Navy 40-7 last time out for the Falcons. They’ll be the only Mountain West team that has played a game so far this season. That’s bad news for the Spartans. San Jose State seems to be on an upward trend, going 5-7 last season. Air Force is just too powerful here. I’m taking the Falcons to cover.

Pick: Air Force -7

UNLV @ San Diego State  (-14, O/U 51.5)

This game is probably the hardest one to make a pick on. A pick will be made, but little confidence will be placed in it. San Diego State is led by Brady Hoke and going with a spread offense. UNLV is led by Marcus Arroyo, the former Oregon offensive coordinator. These teams have played each other close the past two seasons and there seems to be no reason that this year will be any different.

Pick: UNLV +14

Reader Picks

We’re going to try something a little different this year. You guys are going to go head to head with me. I’ll put up my own money for both you guys and myself and we’ll see who is the better bettor at the end of the season. Just something fun for you guys to get involved in with no risk for you.

Here’s how this is going to work. The odds post will come out each week and I’ll make what I believe to be the best bets for each game. Four of the bets will be picked and we’ll tweet out a poll for you guys to choose which bet you believe is most likely to win. I’ll pick one of the other bets and each week we’ll recap the head to head as well as how each team did at the sportsbook.  In the event of a cancellation of a game that was bet on, the next highest chosen bet will be made in its place.

This Weeks Top Picks:

Boise/Utah State Over 58
Wyoming -3
Air Force -7
UNLV +14
