Easily a super sophomore.
It typically takes a group effort to ultimately boast of possessing one of the best defenses in the country, but it often requires athletic performances that people outside of a program don’t see coming. That was the case for the San Diego State Aztecs and defensive tackle Cameron Thomas, the next player on our countdown of the Mountain West’s top athletes, last fall.
Thomas didn’t waste much time ingratiating himself among the red and black faithful, starting all but one game as a redshirt freshman and wreaking havoc in the trenches from the get-go. He collected at least four tackles in eight different games for the Aztecs and finished second among freshmen in the conference with 5.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss, then finished the year as the lone freshman on the media’s all-conference first team, joining former Boise State star Curtis Weaver as the only two players to ever accomplish that feat.
What could he possibly do for an encore with more attention on him in 2020? Everyone but the Mountain West’s centers and guards can’t wait to find out.
