What Would A Schedule Look Like?
If we assume that McMurphy’s tweet is accurate and that some teams may not play, then the Mountain West would probably go to a round-robin schedule like what the Big Ten is doing within its own divisions. This is under the assumption of just nine teams playing.
Mountain West is "finalizing a plan for frequent, rapid response testing and continuing to monitor the status of public health directives in our MW states and communities."

This is speculation, but if there are any teams that don’t play, the conference probably would be scrapping divisions for this year. However, playing teams in their traditional division would make sense, so if you are a West team you play who is playing in that division and then add whatever Mountain teams to get to an eight-game schedule.
If the title game is on Dec. 19, that means the latest an eight-game schedule could start would be on the weekend of Oct. 24 with the league going straight through with no off weeks.
Air Force being mentioned as a team that might not play could be due to them wanting to focus on the Commander-in-Chief trophy, which is probably their main goal year in and year out, even above winning the Mountain West.
If the eight-game schedule is in place, it would not allow for the Falcons to play Army which is scheduled for Nov. 7.
By playing eight games and being done on Dec. 19, it allows the Mountain West to be in consideration for the New Year’s Six bowl games as the selection committee makes its picks on Dec. 20.
