Recap (Matthew Kenerly): Once again, the Spartans’ passing game led the way while a stout defensive effort enabled SJSU to hold off a late rally and hand the Black Knights their fourth loss in a row.
Josh Love finished 20-of-31 for 314 yards and three total touchdowns, including a heads-up catch from Bailey Gaither than just might be the best we’ll see all season. Dejon Packer pitched in with 63 rushing yards on nine carries, while Tre Walker led with six catches for 94 yards.
The Black Knights actually finished the game with a 429-402 edge in total offensive yards, but the Spartans racked up five sacks — including two apiece from Rico Tolefree and Jesse Osuna (who was later ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter) — and created four fumbles while recovering one.
What looked like a runaway CSU victory, turned into a dogfight with the teams trading scores til the end. Fresno State had a chance after a bad throw by Patrick O’Brien was picked off by Juju Hughes. But Logan Stewart was able to pick off a tipped pass for the Rams and O’Brien threw to Warren Jackson for the game winning score.
Warren Jackson continued to impress with nine catches for 178 yards and a touchdown. Marcus McElroy stepped up for the suspended Marvin Kinsey, finishing with 18 carries for 117 yards and two scores. Ronnie Rivers was no slouch for the Bulldogs. He finished with 14 carries for 146 yards and two scores.
