FEI PROJECTION: TBD
San Diego State comes off a bye week to travel to Fort Collins and take on the Colorado State Rams. The Aztecs are coming off of a tough loss at home to the Utah State Aggies, 24-17, but the Rams have gotten off to a very rough start to their season, starting the year 1-4, and have lost three games in a row. The Aztecs are projected to win this game and this is how they can win this road contest.
Keys to an Aztecs Victory
1. Get the running game going.
The Aztecs run-game has been a staple the last 5-10 years but, this year, it has been really inconsistent. It doesn’t help that star running back Juwan Washington has been hurt since the opener against Weber State, though he is supposed to be back this week. If he can’t go, Jordan Byrd and Chance Bell are two great options at the running back position. The Aztecs should look to get the run game going early versus the Rams.
2. Get big plays from the defensive line.
Going into the season, the Aztecs’ young defensive line was a huge concern for head coach Rocky Long. It has looked really good at times and other times they have been nowhere to been found. In their win over New Mexico State, for instance, the Aztecs starting defensive line had five sacks. However, in the home loss to Utah State, they didn’t record a single sack. If the Aztecs expect to win, the defensive line needs to bring the pressure.
3. Ryan Agnew must stand out.
Quarterback Ryan Agnew needs to play well if the Aztecs want to win. He has been really inconsistent this year. Like in the opener he only threw for 108 yards passing but in their win vs. UCLA he threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns. If the Aztecs want to get back in the Win column, great play by Agnew will help.
If the Aztecs do these keys in this weekend’s contest against Colorado State, the Aztecs will probably be victorious in the end.
