Friday, Sept. 27
Final: Air Force 41, San Jose State 24
Recap: (Sean) – The San Jose State hype train was officially derailed on Friday. The most significant thing most will point to in determining the results of this game would have to be the 4th down battles. And there were plenty of them! And on nearly every one of them, the defense came out on top. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the lone stop they had against Air Force came in garbage time against a majority of reserves for the Falcons.
Whether you want to attribute the Falcons success on defending a multitude of 4th down attempts to a dialed defense, or ineptitude to execute on the Spartan offense, the results are nothing short of encouraging if you are an Air Force fan. Milton Bugg III really stood out for Air Force on Friday, doing a great job locking down man all game.
Unfortunately, the other thing that continues to stand out is the Falcons penchant for fumbling the ball. Through just four games they have now put the ball on the ground nine times after another two fumbles Friday. While the offense was humming even with the quarterback carousel, they cannot afford to be irresponsible protecting the pigskin as they head down a grueling stretch of their schedule. Nevertheless, this was just what the doctor ordered to help oil the gears back up on Colorado Springs own variety of the hype train.
The Falcons needed this win, but make no mistake, they have got to continue to improve even on Friday’s route going forward. The five game stretch in front of them will ultimately define their season.
