Is it Bachmeier time.
Boise State is one week away from opening its season against Florida State down in Jacksonville and the big question everyone wants to know is who is going to be the starting quarterback for the Broncos.
The race has been between redshirt sophomore Chase Cord and true freshman Hank Bachmeier. Based upon practice reports from Saturday, all signs point to the true freshman getting the start against the Seminoles.
Bachmeier has been running the first-team offense in basically every drill while Cord has been playing with the backups.
After practice, head coach Bryan Harsin made it official by naming Bachmeier the starting quarterback.
“Hank earned it,” Harsin said after Saturday’s Fall Fan Fest. “It wasn’t given to him. He made throws, he completed passes, he did things in the pocket and he made decisions out there that we want to see. And whether a freshman, senior, doesn’t matter, those are the things that we’re looking for at that position.”
However, Harsin hedged his bets a bit saying that Bachmeier was with the first-team because the scrimmage was treated as a game.
With Bachmeier being named to the starter, Dave Southorn of The Athletic pointed out that he would be the first true freshman to be an FBS starter since Brett Rypien did in 2015.
Here are few clips of Bachmeier during Saturday’s open practice.
Head coach Bryan Harsin has not yet made a decision and a possibility he does after Saturday’s practice or at his regularly scheduled press conference on Monday as the season kicks off.
