Bob Davie has a decision to make

New Mexico fall camp has been a bumpy ride at the quarterback position as projected starter Tevaka Tuioti has been in and out of camp due to the ailing health of his grandfather in California.

Tuioti has missed eight practices and has participated in four practices and is back in Calfornia as of Thursday night.

He has admitted fall camp has been tough both on and off the field. Learning a new scheme and then having to worry about an ailing family member.

Obviously, this is not ideal for a New Mexico team that will likely be near the bottom of the Mountain West but head coach Bob Davie says things are going just fine.

“It really has not been, ‘what are we going to do if …,’” Davie told the Albuquerque Journal. “It’s been more, ‘this how we are and this is how we are doing it.’”

Davie also added that he has not decided who will be the starting quarterback when the team opens up at home against Sam Houston State.

Obviously, Tuioti has experience being in the Lobos program over the past few years but that may not matter as much since there is a new offensive coordinator in Joe Dailey.

The other who are battling for the starting job are senior Sheriron Jones, junior college transfer Brandt Hughes, and redshirt freshman Trae Hall. Jones started seven games last year and Hall was his backup for most of those starts.

There is no timetable for when a starter will be named.
