Henry could be the Mountain West’s biggest X-factor.

Our staff has chosen Nevada’s Malik Henry, the former Florida State commit and Independence Community College quarterback, as our preseason selection for Mountain West football’s newcomer of the year.

Though he is officially still in a race for the QB1 spot in Jay Norvell’s offense, Henry’s arrival in Reno has prompted a lot of excitement from Wolf Pack fans. He was a four-star prospect in the 2016 recruiting class after throwing for 16 touchdowns and just one interception in seven games as a high school senior, but he ultimately ended up at ICC, though his stint there consisted of just two games in which he completed 19-of-43 for 237 yards and a touchdown.

Henry, however, most recently performed well in spring ball, creating buzz that he might be the guy over Cristian Solano and Carson Strong.

We’ll all have to wait and see what decision is made, but we expect Henry to be a major factor in Nevada’s reload and their hopes of climbing to the top of the West division.

Also received votes: Hank Bachmeier, QB, Boise State; Jalen Bates, DE, Colorado State; Junior Fehoko, DE, San Jose State; Austin Griffin, TE, Boise State; Nate Craig-Myers, WR, Colorado State; Trey Smith, RB, Wyoming; Vic Viramontes, LB, UNLV
