Will the Mountain West have a real chance?

Today marked the beginning of “watch list season”, as both the Bednarik Award and the Maxwell Award, the latter of which is given annually to college football’s Player of the Year, kicked off the procession of unveilings.

Utah State quarterback Jordan Love made the list after a blistering 2018 in which he threw for 3,567 yards and accounted for 39 total touchdowns, leading the Aggies to one of their best seasons ever.

Hawaii’s Cole McDonald was added to the Maxwell watch list in the middle of last season for good reason, throwing for 3,875 yards and 36 touchdowns. He also added 580 rushing yards and four touchdowns for good measure, and another season at the helm of the run-and-shoot could mean even more video game numbers.

San Diego State running back Juwan Washington also made the list despite an up-and-down 2018 that was marred by injury. Regardless, he still averaged five yards per carry, while finishing the year with 999 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, and 20.6 yards per kick return.

Nevada running back Toa Taua, last year’s conference freshman of the year, also made the Maxwell list after emerging as one of the Mountain West’s most unforgiving runners. He led the Wolf Pack with 872 rushing yards and finished the year with seven total touchdowns.

Last year’s Maxwell Award winner was Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
