2019 Mountain West Football Top 52 Players: #51, Wyoming K Cooper Rothe
The Wyoming Cowboys kicker and Lou Groza Award finalist is the rare specialist to crack our countdown of Mountain West football’s best.
The Cowboys kicker is nails.
The next player on our list of Mountain West football’s 52 best players is Wyoming kicker Cooper Rothe, who set a high benchmark in a conference suddenly flush with elite specialists of all kinds.
Perhaps no kicker in college football was truer than Rothe last fall after finishing 28-of-28 on extra point attempts and 16-of-17 on field goal tries. He was also 5-of-6 on field goals from 40-plus yards, ranking second by Bill Connelly‘s Field Goal Efficiency metric, and contributed 29 touchbacks on 55 kickoffs.
Little surprise, then, that Rothe earned one of three finalist spots for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation’s best kicker, back in December and is now getting love as a pre-season All-American this summer.
In other words, don’t expect #collegekickers to trend in Laramie anytime soon.
