Mountain West To Play In New Los Angeles Bowl Game vs. Pac-12
The new Los Angeles bowl will basically be the Las Vegas Bowl.
About time the Mountain West gets good bowl news.
The Mountain West bowl news over the past few years has not been great, but Stadium’s Brett McMurphy is reporting some good news on that front. The new Los Angeles-based NFL stadium for the Chargers and Rams will now reportedly be hosting a 2020 bowl game between the Mountain West and the Pac-12.
This is a huge deal since the Las Vegas Bowl wanted a better matchup for its new stadium for the Raiders and is opting for a Pac-12 vs. SEC matchup. There were rumblings of a second bowl game in Sin City for a Mountain West vs. someone matchup but at this time there are no plans for that type of game.
This new game would basically be the same matchup as the Las Vegas Bowl, meaning the bowl gets to take its choice from the Mountain West and then match it up against a Pac-12 team ranging from fifth to seventh.
The really big upside is that this game is going to be in arguably the best football stadium once it is up and running. Playing in that type of facility is a benefit that greatly outweighs playing in Sam Boyd Stadium. The new stadium will also host the 2023 College Football Playoff title game.
The other Mountain West bowl news is that the Arizona Bowl will now feature a Mountain West vs. MAC team, previously the Sun Belt was the opponent.
These announcements are expected to become official in May when the 2020-25 bowl cycle is officially announced.
