San Diego State hosts Boise State Saturday Night at Viejas Arena.
San Diego looks forward to being home against Boise State. The Aztecs are hot at home, last week taking down number 2 Utah State. After going into Moby Arena on Tuesday night and putting the Colorado State Rams away, the Aztecs look forward to righting their embarrassing loss at Boise State.
Boise State ends their 2019 Mountain West California tour looking for a W after losing a close one against Fresno State on Wednesday night. But Boise State has a little hop in their step because they know they can beat San Diego State.
The two teams are statistically closer than they are geographically apart. Boise State sits at a 150 NET ranking where SDSU is at 141, and KenPom has SDSU at 143 and Boise at 137. Both are outsiders looking forward to pushing their luck in Vegas for the Mountain West Conference tournament.
Curtain Calls for Opponents in San Diego
San Diego State hasn’t lost at home since taking a loss to Ivy Leaguers Brown. San Diego State is 10-2 at home this season and continue an 11-game conference home winning streak. Call it the atmosphere, or the familiarity of the arena, but the Aztecs play better at home. Last week, it was a 23-0 run that put away Utah State. This week it could be a triple-double from Jalen McDaniels, who knows.
Keep Nathan Mensah Going
Mensah, like this team, plays better under the lights of Viejas Arena. Could be freshman’s nerves or getting used to the collegiate game, he hasn’t played more than 2 years of basketball at any level, period. His defense was on display against Utah State, and at Colorado State, the team is better when he’s on the floor than sitting on the bench. His double-double stands out, and it could be interesting to see if he continues to play hot in the paint.
Find the right defensive schemes
The last meeting, Derrick Alston torched SDSU off the bench with 30 points shooting 54.3% from the field, including 10 from the line. Alston was moved to the starting role after that game. Also, Boise State shot 56.9% from the field, even I cannot deny that’s not how you win games. In their recent wins, San Diego State has been fluid with their defense, adjusting to players on the floor. Switching from 2-3 zone to man and back, and throw in a full-court press, keeps players guessing.
