The Nevada Wolf Pack will face off against the Boise State Broncos in the first game of the quarterfinals in the Mountain West tournament on Thursday afternoon.
This will be the third contest this season between the Wolf Pack and the Broncos. In the first meeting back on January 15th, the Wolf Pack needed a Cody Martin three pointer late in the game to defeat the Broncos in Boise 72-71. In the second game played in Reno on February 2nd,the Wolf Pack had no problem with the Broncos as Nevada defeated Boise State 93-73.
Boise State is coming off of a victory over Colorado State in the first round of the Mountain West tournament on Wednesday as the Broncos defeated the Rams 66-57. Derrick Alston led Boise State with 17 points while Zach Haney chipped in with 16 points for the Broncos. For Boise State, it was their first Mountain West tournament win since 2015.
For the Wolf Pack, they enter the tournament as the favorite to win it as they have won four of their last five regular season games and earned a share of their third straight regular season Mountain West championship. Nevada, the number one seed in this tournament for the second straight year, will look to win their second Mountain West tournament title in three years and improve their seeding for the NCAA tournament starting next week.
For Nevada to win, they must come out and play with toughness and be aggressive against a Boise State team that will be playing their second game in two days on Thursday as the Wolf Pack will be a well rested team having a bye in the first round of this tournament.
Nevada has shot the ball well against Boise State this season especially in their second contest in Reno back in February. Boise State does have talented players in Alston and Haney but Nevada has too much overall talent for the Broncos to handle. We will see how the Wolf Pack come out in their first game in this postseason on Thursday.
