Protecting a quarterback’s blind side isn’t a job that can be handed to just anyone, which is why Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland, who comes in at #9 on our list of the conference’s best athletes and does that job better than anyone in the Mountain West, just might be the Broncos’ most important returning starter in 2019.

Cleveland made the jump from being an all-conference honorable mention in 2017 to an easy first-team choice in 2018 by excelling in all facets of offensive line play, grading out as far and away the best tackle returning to the Mountain West according to Pro Football Focus. It was no surprise then, as a result, that the Broncos finished 8th nationally by Adjusted Sack Rate and 2nd by Passing Downs Sack Rate.
Still just a junior, the ceiling for Cleveland is absurdly high. There’s already talk that he could follow former greats like Charles Leno and Ryan Clady to become the next Boise State tackle selected in the NFL Draft, but he’ll spend 2019 keeping a new quarterback upright and creating headaches for pass rushers everywhere else in the conference.
