Mountain West champion Fresno State gets its crack at a second Pac-12 team as it takes on an Arizona State team that has had its up and downs this year. They have wins over Pac-12 South champion Utah and also lost to Colorado.
The big story of this game is that the Sun Devils are going to be without star wide receiver N’Keal Harry has declared for the NFL Draft and decided to prepare for that over playing in a bowl game. Look for freshman Geordon Porter is expected to get more reps in this game and the new number one receiver is likely to be Kyle Williams who hauled in 40 receptions this year.
Even though Harry is out, Fresno State will still have to focus on All-Pac-12 first-team running back Eno Benjamin. He rushed for 1,524 yards at 5.5 yards per carry with 12 touchdowns. His style of play and ability to run the ball basically as much as possible could remind the Bulldogs of Alexander Mattison who had 200 yards on 40 carries in the Mountain West title game.
Fresno State’s offense will not be fooled by the Sun Devils scheme since is is a clone of San Diego State’s 3-3-5 which is orchestrated by former Aztecs defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales.
The Bulldogs will want to be physical against the Arizona State defense and try to push them around with the ground attack and then find tight end Jared Rice and wide receiver KeeSean Johnson.
One odd note about this game is that neither of these teams typically play in the evening hours so it will be a bit different to see these two teams play an early afternoon game.
