What do the Broncos need to do to win the Mountain West Championship on Saturday?
Didn’t we just do this between Boise Stae and Fresno State? It’s true, less than a month ago, both of these squads squared off on the Blue Turf.
In the first half, both teams showed they could move the ball, but only one team was finishing drives, and that team was Fresno. Although they weren’t perfect, the Bulldogs did manage to capitalize on 2/3 drives that went inside the Bronco 30.
Boise State managed to drive to the Bulldog’s 33-yard line or better 4 times, coming away with only three points to show for it. Scoring opportunities were missed due to a missed field goal, an unsuccessful fake field goal, and an interception. Despite these missed opportunities, the Broncos went into the half down just seven and a total yard advantage of 221 to 181. Boise State woke up in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points in route to a 24-17 victory.
After their November 9th battle, both the Bulldogs and the Broncos finished their respective seasons without a loss. Fresno State took down San Diego State and San Jose State, while Boise State beat New Mexico and a ranked Utah State team.
Both teams are also now ranked in the College Football Playoff Poll with Fresno at 25 and Boise State at 23. In addition to the victor of this game being crowned Mountain West Champion, if the right dominos fall in the AAC Championship Game, the winner Saturday would go on to represent the Group of 5 in a New Year’s 6 Game (most likely the Fiesta Bowl).
Let’s take a look at my original keys for a Bronco victory from November 9th and what Boise State needs to do to come away with the Mountain West Crown Saturday.
